How to change Default Printer Settings

Whenever you print a file, you are able to choose printer settings by clicking on a 'Properties' or 'Printing Preferences' button. Here is an example from Word:

But this only changes the settings for that specific document. It is very useful to change the default printer settings so it remembers your settings every time you print something.

Step 1

From the Start button, click on 'Printers and Faxes'.

If you cannot see it in the Start Menu, click on Control Panel instead, then double-click 'Printers and Faxes'.

Step 2

At the 'Printers and Faxes' window, choose the printer you want to change the settings for, then right-click it.

From the right-click menu, choose 'Printing Preferences...'.

Step 3

Most laser printers have similar looking Printing Preferences windows. If you own an inkjet printer, the window may look more complicated, but the basic settings will still be there somewhere.

At the top there are two tabs - 'Layout' and 'Paper/Quality'.

At the 'Layout' tab, you can choose the orientation of your print out. If you choose Landscape, it will rotate the documents by 90 degrees before it prints them out.

You can change the page order: To print the last page of the document first, choose Back to Front.

You can also choose to print multiple pages per sheet. The printer will shrink the pages and arrange them before it prints them out.

At the 'Paper/Quality' tab you can choose which tray the printer will feed paper from. 'Auto' means that if Tray 1 is not available or empty, it will switch to Tray 2 automatically. It is the convention that Tray 1 is the highest tray of your printer, and they count up as they get lower down.

Once you have selected your preferences click ok, and you're ready to go.
