What TechDivision say:
With the release of Windows Vista at the end of this year, and the end of support of Windows 98 from this summer it begs the question 'should I be upgrading?' If you're using a relatively recent version of Windows, like Windows 2000 or XP, then you shouldn't be concerned. But if you're still using the really old Windows releases, like 95, 98 or even the 'Millennium edition', ME, then you need to think carefully.

There is no support at all for Windows 95 and support for Windows 98 will stop in the summer, so when bugs or security problems are found they won't get fixed. If you are an internet user, which most computer users are these days, this could pose a real danger. The likelihood is if you're using these older versions your computer probably isn't powerful enough to run the latest operating systems.

Our recommendation is you should look at upgrading your computer every 4 or 5 years. Give us a call if you're not sure what your options are.

New Windows security concerns in the wild
8th February 2006
Microsoft has warned of two security issues that put some windows users at risk of attack.
1. One security problem is related to how ageing versions of Internet Explorer handle malformed Windows Meta File images on the Millennium and 2000 editions. The flaw only exists in IE 5.01 with SP4 on Windows 2000 and IE 5.5 with SP2 on Windows ME. Microsoft recommends users upgrade to IE6 with SP1.

2. Microsoft has warned of a problem with overly permissive access controls in Windows XP and Server 2003. The problem only exists in versions that do not have the latest SP installed. Microsoft suggests installing SP2 on Windows XP or SP1 on Windows Server 2003
